Thread: 2009 FIFA Women's Player of the year

Started 17 hours ago by SiberianThunderT
Shortlist announced . Players by country: 4 - Germany 2 - Brazil 1 - Japan, France, England, USA I would put a players-by-position count up as well, but I don't know the German WNT well and am currently to lazy to look them up.... >.> <.< What does everyone think? Personally I think Solo should be in over Wambach.... not going to comment on the country breakdown since I'm...

My vote would go to Inka Grings or Kelly Smith. And Hope Solo certainly deserved a place in the list.

Hope Solo just deserve a place on that list what has prinz done this year I can easaly name 20 players who deserve more to be there then she! I can even name al lot mor german girl beter than Prinz! and Hope is a lot better then Angerer (does Angerer make any difrence with FFC Franfurt when she has no defenders like Krahn?) No! she fails and Hope actualy tooked the atletica to ...

Wow... this thread is much less active than last year's was.... Anyway, down to five: Cristiane Marta Smith Prinz Grings Still do now understand how Smith and Prinz have made it this far. I think FIFA is going on name recognition only at this point for them.

SloanDarwin replied 11 hours, 45 minutes ago
On the women's side, this award always was a name recognition contest, simply because there is no way to really follow foreign leagues and their top players. How could anyone from the U.S. form an objective opinion of players from Germany or Sweden or vice versa - it's basically impossible. Thus the top players more or less stay the same until the next World Cup, meaning no one should ...

And it's denying the influence of coaches, tactics and teamwork. sure cause they could have won the euro 2009 without Prinz I know that for sure

For all the stat heads (aka, Americans ) I broke down the voting, based on FIFA ranking. I thought it was quite interesting. I broke it down by captains votes by tier, coches votes by tier, combined by tier, then combined tiers -- 1&2, and 3&4. And how the ranking of players looks, listed from 1-10. The complete run down starts here, along with explanations of how I tallied these, etc....

Exactly, soccer is a team sport. Saying that Germany only won 2 world cups because of Prinz' individual quality is denying the class and influence of players like Wiegmann, Jones, Garefrekes (2003) or Angerer, Lingor, Krahn (2007). And it's denying the influence of coaches, tactics and teamwork.

Hmm. Looks like names (Prinz, Wambach, Cristiane) did much better in the lower tiers than the upper tiers. Though I'm still surprised Bomp didn't place higher overall. @import "http://diacache.daylife.com/_static/release-46080/v2/css/daylife/thickbox.css";

Voting was: Marta (833 points) Birgit Prinz (290) Kelly Smith (252) Cristiane (239) Inka Grings (216) Without any major competition next year, I'm sure Marta will win again, even if she is injured all year long.

Is she a great player? Brilliant. But there are dozens of world class players around the planet and comparing them is like wine tasting. Even the truest aficionados have different opinions. You simply cannot have seen enough of the players to know the correct answer, so it comes down to personal taste based on the tiny fractions you have seen, or image and your geopolitics in the more likely case that you have never seen any of them play this...

turbo11: I don't think there is any bashing on Marta. She is one of, if not THE (as the vote shows) best player in the world. The knock is on the lack of knowledge of many players in the women's game amongst fans, media and coaches and players alike. The knock is that Marta keeps winning because nobody cares enough to pay attention to other players or teams. It starts with media coverage and fan support, which go hand in hand. Think...

I believe that Marta is the best women's soccer player there has been for sometime but she was not the best this past year & that is where my problem lies. If you are going to have this award on a yearly basis then the candidates should be evaluated on that yearly basis. For me Marta was as good as she was last year unfortunately for her imo other players elavated their game and were better than her this year. Grings for one and i...
