Thread: 1 person's smart way of dealing with removing the car...

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Anita Porpoise
Taxi service really helped senior who stopped driving JEANNE PHILLIPS (aka Dear Abby) Several years ago, when I realized that my mother's eyesight and reflexes weren't what they once were, I sold her car, put the money in an interest- bearing account, and contracted with a cab company to have a taxi at Mom's assisted-living facility whenever she needed transportation. Anita, This is another way to "think outside of the box". If we sit down we can usually come up with new options to the big problem. Only thing I'd worry about, what if LO is in store longer then 1/2 hr (cabbie gone) who confirms mom isn't lost or wandered off down the road?? I could see this definitely happening with my mom, as that's why I always go with her and walk the stores with cart. ...

Jazzy, not so sure this would be as good an answer for someone with dementia who was progressed enough that they were getting lost/wandering.

This story was not intended for everyone. If your LO is a wanderer, you would not let them drive and you would not let them go anywhere alone. In this situation, the mother wasn't a wanderer, just an unsafe driver. I still think this is an excellent solution for someone that is well aware that they are losing their freedoms.

I do understand it depends on the stage of the LO. Guess when I responded I was thinking of my mom, as she can get confused and turned around in large places. Thanks as it's definitely a great alternative for many people!!!

What ended the I-want-to-drive discussions with my mom: Moving to California. She is scared silly of the traffic here! Sometimes big cities can be a very good thing indeed.

Thanks Anita. That was a great way of looking at it. Sometimes I wish I could come up with clever ideas as well
