Do they both have the same amount of teeth? Call up a Honda parts store and see if they both have the same part number if so. Or just check various part numbers online for both bikes.
FYI, I just put primary drive sprockets on my 96 XR250 with no problems.

I'm in the process of ordering a new front and rear sprockets and chain for my '03 XR250. I am planning on ordering them from RockyMountainATV along with a new front tire, and based on some reviews ... a few people said they had a hard time getting the Primary Drive front sprocket to mount up smoothly. I would rather go with the Renthal front sprocket because that got better reviews. ...
