Thread: 180gm vinyl problem

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by RogerFarbey
I bought a couple of new 180gm vinyl albums (Tubby Hayes and Joe Harriott) but to my surprise and dismay they are too heavy for my old NAD 5120 turntable (causing a half revolution regular 'scraping' sound) and I can't seem to adjust the suspension on the t/t at all. I am not thinking of buying a new turntable but hope I won't have a similar experience. Anyone else had a similar problem.

I'm using the bookshelf speakers that Peachtree sells, I bought them in a combination package. Nintey percent or more of my listening is done with the main system in the living room/dining room though, better sound. http://www.stereomojo.com/PeachTree%...eccoReview. htm No, the Wadia does NOT have a built in DAC, it just sends out the digital signal via USB or Coaxial. ...

Well thank you for the title! But. . . I'd prefer just to have a raise! I definitely am a happy, lucky man. My bubble may burst, but I'm inside it now.

I've found the US releases of RVG sides too hot, too forward and quickly fatiguing in my system. On the contrary, the Japanese RVGs are sweet and smooth. You can't go wrong with any of the US Impulse cds, the paper jacket Verves or most ECM sides.

In my years of experience experimenting with audio (vodoo and all), all things being equal, good recordings sound well on good equipment. It is always a brilliant idea to bring along your favorite and familiar records. Those in the shops usually are audiophile pressings, include ordinary pressings of CDs and LPs. It would be also a good idea what kind of music you always enjoy and which ...

nice set up, Brett. My hearing doesnt work as well as when I was younger (what does?), so I don't get as much outta high quality sound as I used to - but I still like to look and still have lust for nice gear.

Heavy BYG vinyl, from the Planet Gong no doubt?

Hello, My name is Justin--I'm a musician and writer in the city and I really, really want to listen to great music on audiophile-grade systems. Problem is, I don't have so much as one turntable to my name. I'm mostly interested in jazz, minimal classical a la Steve Reich, Terry Riley, early ambient like Harold Budd and Brian Eno, impressionism like that of Ravel and Debussy, and Bach's solo pipe organ and lute/cello suites....

I have a 240 gram (talk about overkill) audiophile LP which plays quite successfully on my mid 90s Michelle deck, so the 180s are no problem. Why only scrape every half revolution -- sounds like maybe one of the suspension springs has grown weak. Try checking if the platter + LP is still flat

You'll have to forgive me but buying 180-240 gram vinyl to be played on what sounds like substandard turntables doesn't quite make sense. Like buying primo radials to throw on a junkyard dog, no? That's a little harsh so I'll just say that before I bought another high-priced heavyweight piece of vinyl, I'd invest on getting the turntable to a pro for a tune-up!

So it seems that sometimes you need a good heavy pressing to M.O.T. your turntable eh? - in which case mine must be functioning just fine, as I recently bought a couple of original BYG/Actuel LPs - and they are some of the heaviest pieces of vinyl I've ever picked up!
