My truck does the same thing. Have to cycle the plugs 2 or 3 times and crank a lot when near or below 40F. My previous starter turned faster and didn't have this problem. My current one is turning slower and pegging the VAT-40 on initial crank. We just put a new gear reduction unit on a rig at work and it cranks fast with alot less amp draw. Just finished mine. Found 3 different brands and 2 were swollen. Glad I did it when I did. I also did a compression check while they were out. Avg 360 pounds. truck starts much better now. all motorcraft.
