I heard this on the radio this morning and had a look at the various herds of cows and sheep I pass in the morning. I'd say probably the majority DO face in the same direction whilst grazing, but a fair few don't. Why did someone decided to do such a pointless piece of research anyway?

Pointless???!!! MAGNETIC COWS!!!!???!!!. It's going to revolutionise farming. Think how much easier herding them will be. And if you tie two of them together back-to-back, you've built yourself a perpetual motion device. My only worry is that this isn't, in fact, a natural occurrence, and that domestic cows have merely been magnetised by years of exposure to electric fences. My own ...

As an illustration of the basic idea, I've attached some of the artwork that I've had done for my upcoming venture capital pitch. Constructive criticism from scientific peer groups is welcomed.

In the northern hemisphere north facing surfaces get less sun, so they're more damp. That's why moss grows on the north side of a tree in this country, and everybody wants a south-facing garden. Checking out the moss on trees is an excellent way to get your bearings. If I was a cow I think I'd rather have a cold, damp face than a cold, damp arse. But if it was windy I'd probably want to ...

The cows aren't magnetic, they're just trying to get comfy. Some problems with this. 1. If the cow is interested in gaining heat from the sunshine (very ...

I passed the cows in the fields today and they looked like they were lined up, but I've just checked a map and it was east/west.

Never let evidence get in the way of a good theory. The cow lying down was obviously giving birth. That way the calf would be facing north/south when it arrived.
