Okay, does a judge have the right to have a 9 year old child made a ward of court because he thinks the child's name is so silly that it should be changed? On first hearing this seems an outrageous interference by a judge into family life. That's what I thought, at first. Think about it, select the 'hidden' line below to see the child's name and then see what you think about it. > ...

I know intellectually that there are people out there crazier than I am but physical evidence of it is always disturbing.. geez...I wouldn't even do that to a dog! (maybe a hamster or definatly a fish) but the judge making the kid a ward of the court is a little overboard. yeah it's a silly name but that's what nicknames are for....

Not sure on the legal issue, but I remember seeing the article in a local newspaper and immediately feeling angry at the parents. I know they've got the right to call their kid whatever they want, but surely they knew that calling her something like that was going to cause her problems (and, likely as not, bullying) later on. And they're far from being alone in this, of course. I used to ...

Re: NZ Judge Has Child Renamed.... I think he did the right thing. It is getting out of control. Used to be your name was something that you could be proud of. A family name with history and honor or dishoner behind it. Now people act as if they're naming a friggin pet! It shows you how they view their children. Definitely not as people.

According to the link (see post # 4) the girl's name was brought to the attention of the judge because she was involved in a custody battle. So she was involved in a legal process anyway and it looks like the judge took pity on her (who wouldn't?). She refused to tell her friends her name and just asked them to call her 'K'. It'll be interesting, when she grows up, to find out if she appreciated what the judge did....

Ha ha ha ha ha. It's such a great name to say! I don't know why the poor kid didn't just keep her name hidden and call herself just Tulela.

I've known a few people who's parents have seemed to show a lapse in judgement in the naming area. The worst one was a kid who's parents were into mind altering substances and dubbed her "Zero". My parents went down the uncommon name line themselves with my sisters and I have copped alot for my name as it is still fairly uncommon, but at least it isn't Pilot Inspecktor.

Re: NZ Judge Has Child Renamed.... No, I don't think a judge should make a child a ward of the court/state because of such a thing; that is going much, much too far. It's the sort of ham-fisted response one learns to expect from the system these days, and it mucks up one hell of a lot more than it mends! There are many other solutions available to a judge, not to mention some creative solutions such as we've been seeing from...
