This got started in another thread and I wanted to see every ones opinions. When is a spoiler tag no longer needed (if ever) for discussion about a movie? Obviously (IMO) spoiler tags are used for movies that are in theaters or have not been released on DVD yet, but how long after? Should any discussion about a movie carry spoiler warnings or tags since someone somewhere may have not seen it?...

I don't really think there is a right or wrong answer. If you go into any thread specific to a movie, you should expect some level of spoilers, but spoiler tags should definitely be used in more recent threads. In general threads, use discretion. If what you are saying is totally important to the plot (like in the case you mentioned) and can ' spoil' a movie, then yes, spoiler tags. However ...

I think spoiler tags should only be used when something off-topic is brought into a discussion. If the thread is SAW III - Official discussion, and you haven't seen Saw III, then stay the fuck out of the thread. Does everyone need to hold you by the hand and babysit you? Does the entire thread need to be littered with SPOILER ALERT after SPOILER ALERT after SPOILER ALERT because someone...

All I know is that when I'm reading something about an older film I haven't seen, but plan on it, I immediately stop reading the post if it even slightly appears that it may ruin the film. I don't need the spoiler tag to have enough common sense to stop reading and click the down arrow. But that's just me. And if there's an official thread about a new movie that I haven't seen, I won't ...

Just out of common decency, you should always post a spoiler warning when giving away crucial info regarding a films plot.. In fact if you continue to post spoilers without warning, you'll likely be warned yourself. But at the other end of the spectrum, if you knowingly go traipsing about in the thread of a film you've yet to see.. you've no one to blame but yourself if you end up learning more ...

It didn't really give away any "crucial" information, but it showed way too much of the movie. It basically took a second or two of most of the major...
