A lot depends on what you want to spend...between 2002 and 2003 the previous generation Prado was still available and are still carrying a price tag of up to approx. R260K. Then you've got to take the 2nd hand turbo diesel "thing" into consideration too. I'm (almost) in the market for the previous generation Prado too and have being doing quite a bit of homework. I initially also wanted the 3....

At the risk of starting a fight, why have you been told to avoid the Disco II? Space, ability, usage practicality, maintenance costs, comfort, etc...? I have no idea of the pros and cons of the Prado but could maybe help on the Disco side. I'm also "almost" in the market, but like Trev has put it on the "Diesel Issues" in general I will probably also go the V8 route. Very interesting comparison, ...

Hi richr, Ok, should you decide on a 2nd hand diesel (turbo) then BEFORE you buy it have the dealer send it (some will be willing to pay for it too) to a turbo diesel specialist e.g. SAC or DASTEK and have them go over the motor. They will soon enough tell you what condition the motor is in at that point. One thing however they obviously don't open the motor up so cannot comment on the condition ...

Purchasing a Diesel is often false economy as, especially in SA with high diesel costs, it often evens out over time when one considers all costs. I did the calculations on my Prevoius Disco and even although the Tdi and V8 were about the same I chose the Tdi due to range. I don't want to carry fuel in cans for a range of 800km's. Besides this, what Trev said! Get it checked out by a reputable ...

As far as I know, there are some 2002 model Disco IIs that do not have the protruding center diff lock actuation shaft stub and can not be easily modified to lock the center diff. I am not sure if we got any of these in South Africa, but it would be worth checking that the stub is ...
