I don't understand, I went to school and got my Bachelor of Science degree in Web Design. I still feel like I don't know anything. Why don't I know PHP or ASP? CMS? I don't know anything about content managmenet systems, wordpress, drupal, .net? I keep on looking at job postings in the web section and these always pop up. I learned only know flash, dreamweaver, photoshop, illustrator and I don'...

It looks like (no pun intended) your tutors at your college were fresh graduate themself or you are not fit for the web-designing world. Again, no offence meant. If you had done the basics of programming well, you should'nt be having problem with any of the coding stuff. Take for me as an example. All I learned in a diploma course was dreamweaver, that too version 4.0, yet I don't find it ...

I'd like to high five pink for being the first college grad who realized their degree might not be everything it was promised to be. Schools teach those specifics because they have to, however the stronger skillsets I think should be taught focus on the methods and tools, and not so much the language. A lot of us though (not me, i'm not a dev, just a system admin) work in a field related to ...

Lol, You put me and my comments to shame. No wonder you are an "admin" me a programmer. I don't mean to discourage anyone. All I wanted to say is you might need to be focussed and do a lot more work to where you want to be. Just don't get hyped by what others can do. They too went through the routine to be where they are. Best of luck. Quote:...

Definitely... some of the guys posting on here are absolute geniuses when it comes to code.... A college degree will make your resume look better, but epecially when it comes to coding and development, I've always thought of it similar to trying to "learn" how to become a rock star. You just really gotta live and love what you do. hah! If you really enjoy working with code, and ...

you're probably thinking whats wrong with this girl, but these are real questions and I am really lost. I have a collection of Dummies books, which I think are really easy to read. Python gives me head cramps . My major (Multimedia Web Design) was so broad, I haven't focused on just programming and coding. We learned Adobe, Macromedia, Protools, Premiere, and a lot of outdated software and...

Wi PinkFeather, welcome to programming talk, 1 of the best community sites I know and the admin keep it well maintained, if anyone is out of line they are soon kicked back into place so feel no fear when asking questions. I have always found it more reliable to learn from books and take my own time with things. As you have experienced you drifted through a course that has left you not really ...

I've been programming for many years, but google and the blogs have changed how I work. Now, whenever I don't remember how to do something or have never done it, I head straight for the google search box and then learn from one or more of the generous bloggers or from forums like this one. When you want to learn a new language, just start coding. Do the "Hello World" program and...

I may be wrong but isnt the line require_once ('inc/mysql_connect.php') or die(mysql_error()); just going to return the last (or even some random) error generated by MySQL? connecting to the db is one thing but generating a error from a php error wont help. Id recommend putting the or die(mysql_error()) on the end of where you actually connect and not use it as an error clause when trying to find the connection file. Session...
Thanks UnRealEd. Your response is really helpful and motivating, you seem like an optimist. I have tried a couple of times to get people to start some a small project with me, but I don't know anyone on my level(all my friends are into pop culture and stuff like that, and my colleagues are far gone and moved on). I am a beginner to programming, but know more than a regular person that doesn't know anything about programming. So I got...
There's always linux user groups, or php meetups depending on where you live. Granted, these usually aren't large groups, but it does provide a level of social networking. But so far, this forum is still my favorite as well.

Web 2.0 Expo has shows in San Fran, New York, Germany, Tokyo, etc. If you can hit one of those, they are an excellent learning...

Actually I'm not an optimist at all, I'm more of a realist (not really fond of optimistic people , they tend to be a little naive). I agree, once you know syntax generally, and can apply that to more than one language, everything else just falls into place. It might even help you think more logically =)
