I really enjoyed this film, definitely one of the best of last year, but I thought the narration was one of the weaker points. It was mostly uninteresting and obvious comments about what was happening and sometimes the inner thoughts of the character. Both were unnecessary, especially relaying the characters' emotions, since the performances were strong enough that we know Jesse's ...

I almost always agree with that Adaptation quote. I despise poorly used voiceover. Shopgirl, Little Children, Road to Perdition, a few examples I can think of where the voiceover detracts from the film (fatally for the former two). In this film, though, I thought it was used to great artistic effect. I think the narration should be understood with the same sense of irony as the ...

UPDATED Thu Jul 3 2008 16:55:44 The narration seems meant to set the tone by imitating a documentary style most notably used by Ken Burns in The Civil War. I think it worked as well as the rest of the movie but overall the portrayal of the period dialog (or even the dialog itself) came across as forced and unnatural. - In another thread someone mentioned the similaritiy ...

I couldn't get enough of the narrator after that opening introduction of Jesse James. When the narration came back full swing during the falling action, it only made the pot sweeter for me.

The narration sounded like something out of a history documentary. In my opinion, it made a strong statement in regards to the fairness and resulting tragedy of history.
