Because they live together (in college like dorms) and train together, eat together, watch other competitions together and compete against each other. If you get to know someone, regardless of political ideology you might find you like them.

Because it brought them all together for 2 weeks. They slept, ate, trained, and lived together throughout the olympics...it's kind of contradictory though, because the olympics are basically one giant competition to prove who is the best....
