In the dove thread I posted the pix below, and wanted some comments about snake breaking. Lets do it here as it applies to more then dove season, either one but this is about snakebreaking Heres a den of green mojave rattlers I was sent the pix in an email from a friend who works in the field for a power company. If your dog stumbles into this he's dead I think, I dont think he...

I also hunt in the deserts every time I've seen a snake while hunting it ended up missing its head. I have seen many ways one of the best was a rattler with a large rubber band around his mouth the dog walks up to smell and you stim the dog with a ecollar. Keep repeating till the dog knows. This was done by a pro. dog trainer.

Looking more into the training I found some trainers are using mild shock as opposed to the mega watt stuff I was lead to believe, The thinking is to keep the dog up on this every year by a refresher course. This appeals to me more than the life time traumatic one time thing. I also found out some snake researchers are actually training brits to seek snakes out to study. Because of the ...

3 or 4 years back my younger son walked up beside a pointer on point. All of a sudden he grabbed the dog's collar with one hand and fired his shotgun with the other. The dog had pointed a 4 ft. rattler.

great job from your son, may have saved you a thousand dollars and showed you can trust your son to react in a calm and positive way in the face of danger. How old was your son?

He was about 22 at the time. All of mine are grown. But we still hunt as much as possible.

I snake break my dogs as they have the potential of running into a poisonous snake several times a year. I do the "old fashioned" way of high intensity shock. Depending on the dog, the training may last a lifetime or it may need to be refreshed on a regular basis regardless of the method used. I have or had dogs that took only one shock to get the message across for life while others have needed...
