Well its past the middle of June and we only have July and august left. (Im not in a rush as I like summer) About this time of the year I start to buy junk to take with me Dove hunting. This year on my list is: New GPS hand held (anyone want to recommend one?) Order those special shotshells (I like the target loads 1300 fps 8's 16-12-28-20 gauge) I also like the 12's to be ...

I have a few really good tips to get ready for dove season with Fido. I always make it to Yuma for the opener and 120 deg. days are not that un common. Average about 110. A lot of people dont take their dogs to dove hunt because of the heat and its more a waiting and fetching game anyway. I think some people miss out on some fun by not taking the pup. But it is a little hassle. ...

I too travel to Dove hunt, usually about ten miles. We almost always hunt on a stock pond or some kind of water and that helps the dogs. I did mhave a time where we hunted a spot without water and my old dog Chaco got heat stroke. I had to carry him out about a mile and believe me that was not fun. I sat him in the truck and ran the AC on him then we got him to a pond. The ...

Field of dreams...Chaco? Getting the dogs in shape, and the first hunt of the year. You’re Right about that, a hyper dog will be hyper in that heat too. and if He’s not ready for the heat, a heat stroke is possible. Its getting warmer here and as some know Im working some Brits that are eight months old. two are mine. We went out today with live pigeons and I ran the butts off the dogs...

I agree and disagree aya. I force break my dogs but I don't make it a hard long drawn out thing. i do it slow and make if as fun as I can for the dog. Do a little at a time and go slow. I agree about taking it slow and making it fun though. I pushed Darby too hard too fast and am still paying for the mistakes I made. I decided to not go as hard with Jed and it's worked out ...

aya16, This is very informative, sir! I hope many folks are reading and listening. Though I've been away from the outdoors for some time, I can relate to the training you mentioned. Who was my teacher? None other than a cross-breed pointer, mind you. No human could ever teach me what I learned from my pointer. What do I mean you ask? I say there is no training involved in the...

sx1 thanks and my dad was sir Im mike. A little Brit that could taught me this many years ago. I actually trained over her breeding and couldnt get it back. She was a great hunter but she had one eye on me and the other in the field. I wonder how well she could have been If training was like I do now. I do use the e-collar now and back then, The collars are a lot better now than they were...

Mike, What I did to keep my dogs cool was carry a gallon canteen filled with crushed ice and water for them to drink. I also used a small folding entrenching tool to remove surface dirt to get to cooler dirt for them to lie on to cool their bellies. This is no good in very dry places. I don't mean to hijack this tread, so I'll just mention one more thing. My pointer was exposed to ...

I just teach my dogs to sit and stay. It's part of basic obedience anyway. _________________ “Trickery and treachery are the practices of fools that have not the wits enough to be honest” Benjamin Franklin The more things are forbidden, the more popular they become” Mark Twain
