my friend got sony soundforge and was wondering if it had a feature where you could create mixes like dj's do. for example, extract vocals and match them up with other instrumentals. if you can't do it with soundforge, is there any other software you can do this. again, take out vocals from a song and layer them on the instrumental of a different song...

You cant extract vocals from any mixed down song. Either you have a REAL and clean accapella or your SOL. So no, nothing can do this. You could do some tricks to "kind of" make this happen but the tracks would sound crappy as hell, all phasy and shit. Just look online for accapellas you find the right spots there are tens of thousands at your disposal. Once you have a ...

There is only one way i know of and thats if the vocals are panned say right, and all the other instruments ect are on the left so you can cut em out - this is highly unlikey though as most vox sit right in the middle of the mix on most music. you are indeed, shit out of luck. as the bloke above says, use accapellas. _________________ www.soundclick.com/djkemzino 'Dont piss down my back...

The only exception here is if you have the "normal" mix and an instrumental of the same mix - I mean the SAME, EXACT, PERFECT mix. Not one that's been altered from the vocal mix in any possible way except for the fact that it has no vocal. You can invert the polarity on one which will extract the difference between the two. But again, we're talking "perfect" copies of the same...

You can tend to isolate the vocals enough for a mix though. Vocals are generally centred. Isolating the most centred aspect of the track gets you the vocals, a softer version of the backing, and then you can roll the instrumentals down even more with eq. Then you can use a vocoder on it to get the richness of the vocals back. Takes a long time, I've given up on at least 10 of those projects. ...
