There's a difference between "doting" over your kids and caring for them. Just because someone is against doting over their kids or being with them every waking moment doesn't mean "why should they even bother having kids." Ivory's point was that you don't need to be with your child every second in order for the child to be raised correctly (correct me if I'm wrong Ivory).
