You could try bamboo skewers: It's a skewer. If it fits, it works.

Steel ones are just fine. They are preferable for MTB use, but for road, they are something to install and just forget about. No worries about failure, generally speaking.

Steel skewers are stronger, more reliable, and cheaper than aluminum or titanium. Shimano steel skewers are a great value.

If you want to ride with boat anchors its your choice. All of us with Ti skewers will snicker as we drop yuou up the climbs. "My god he's still using steel skewers"

I have a pair of FSA steel skewers. They have a pretty strong bite and seem solidly made. Can't remember how much they were, but I think about $40.00.
