Linux for photographers (This post will get to photography, but I need to talk computer OSes first to get there. Thanks.) Anyone here use Linux? I've used MS DOS and various versions of Windows for years, but recently I tried Ubuntu Linux. I'm very impressed by this operating system. I wanted to convert an old clunker PC into a ...

I've been using Ubuntu for about two years now (the Dapper Drake beta was what got me to switch), and I have no problem at all with photography, either my own stuff for fun or the work I do for clients. First, make sure you get the newest Ubuntu, which I see you've already done. The newest stable release of the GIMP, which is included, has added a lot in terms of both features and just ...

I converted to Ubuntu about 2 years ago. Since getting my EOS400D I've done a lot of playing and have been quite happy with the combo of UFRAW and GIMP. Thanks to this thread, I have now installed CinePaint to give that a try. My main problem is having used Paint Shop Pro 5 for so many years that I know it backwards means I find other software annoying, tried a newer PSP in windows on a ...

I also use Ubuntu since Breezy, then the 6.06LTS and finally 8.04 LTS at home. I recently updated to the Gimpshop resembles PS quite a bit and they keep improving. I would say it has about 85% of the features and all the most commonly used ones. I don't use RAW since my P&S isn't capable of it, but I know people that use RAWStudio and they say it works great.

To each his own I suppose. Ubuntu 8.04 is an LTS (Long Term Release) meaning it is stable but not necessarily bleeding edge. I seriously doubt that it would be lacking in features. Take XP or Vista for instance. Besides the OS, what features, practical programs and applications do you get? one? two? zero? Usability is subjective, but since I have grown along with Linux, I would have to say ...

I recommend Bibble. Out of the two it's the closest to Lightroom. And it's cheaper than Lightzone. A lot cheaper.

Neon612 brought up an interesting point about Wine. It was officially released a few days ago and is claiming to be fully compatible with Photoshop CS2. I'm currently using a Mac and do not have the spare hard drive space to do a test install of Linux inside my copy of Parallels. However, I bet Wine would be a GREAT solution for many people.
