No one is suggesting that we're "destroying" the Earth, except those with a personified view of the planet. The Earth will still be there if it becomes inhospitable to life. People DO think that we're destroying Earth, though. So humans want to preserve the environment so we can have a stable future and do what - mess it up more? There's no possible way for us to exist on this planet without altering it, especially at the numbers we're at now.
