I have a 8 month old toy poodle who came into her first heat 18 days ago. First thing is that she never had any discharge bloody or otherwise. She has just had swelling. Is that normal or should I be concerned? How long will it take for the swelling to subside? Should it be gone by day 21or does it sometimes take a little longer?

She be spayed, period. Then you don't have to worry about her having deformed dogs, and losing a TON of money on her c-section, etc.

95% of purebreds should be fixed (and ALL healthy mixes). Only purebred dogs who are two years old and up, have been titled, are ambassadors of their breed, and have passed through their genetic health screening with flying colours, should ever be bred. A new breeder should never attempt to breed if they do not have a mentor. Also, if you are serious about breeding; help out with rescue. A ...

Small breeds often do not have a lot of discharge. And, yes - usually the swelling does down by the end of the cycle. Please get her fixed as soon as your veterinarian gives you the go-ahead!!

A lot of small breeds have sneak heats which do not have visual symptoms. If she is the only dog you have, or if she is not around other dogs, it is pretty common. Eight months old is a little late for her first heat. My small breeds usually go into heat earlier than large breeds as they reach their maturity earlier. You would be very surprised at how many toy breeds or bred on their first heat. ...

21 days.7 to come in heat ,7 in (3 bleeding, them 4 for breeding),7 to go out.Not all 1st heat cycles are breedable (bleeding).Dogs should not be bred until 2 years of age, so their insides are mature enough.

Well not all dogs have discharge.. ITs better for you if they don't, that don't mean like u said they can't swell.. is she registered? If she is and u are planning on breeding her, with AKC, they have to be a 1 year old to be able to breed cause they aren't fullly devloped at 8 months old! GOOD LUCK
