I would think all guild members (WGA, DGA, SAG, etc.) would welcome any live television program, especially awards shows, rather than picket them or discourage their members from attending. What better forum than a live event to have many of the presenters, winners and nominees proclaiming how unfair the producers/studios are being to the writers? I can just see all of that happening both on ...

This is the single biggest Oscar-related issue, and at this point it has only been hinted at or discussed in whispers. But there is a major question of what effect the Writers' Guild Strike will have on the late February Oscars. The almost total lack of trade paper Oscar ads this week is a clear sign that something is up. (I've copied my most recent post on the FYC thread below, but the issue ...

I wouldn't be suprised if this happened. It would depress the hell out of me, though.

I think its possible for this issue to be resolved by then. If not, I don't think the Oscars will happen. If I am wrong, the winners may just be announced.

I hope it's delayed. If the Oscars were in May just to think about the upsets would be worth the wait. I thank the Academy for the wins for Jennifer Hudson and Helen Mirren. I also want to say, HALLELUJAH! THERE WAS AN UPSET IN THE ACTING CATEGORIES!Congrats Alan!

Here's one of the myriad questions for which we can only speculate. I doubt the delay would occur until after the ballots are in, so that it would have no impact on the outcome. This would be assuming that the Academy and ABC (which is owned by Disney, one of the key players on the producers side) would want to hold off making a decision until the last minute. But that is making assumptions ...

Boomer - you could easily be right on all your points, especially the one about the Oscars being used as a pro-strike statement - although how effective that would be and whether ABC would threated to edit any pro-strike comments could be an issue. Picture this: no Oscar boycott - but the first award is announced, amid some pro-writers statements which are deleted with the tape delay - word ...

Why would the Oscars have to be delayed if the strike is still going on? Why couldn't stars just come out, one minute past the show's start time and start handing out Oscars, like the Golden Globes have done for years? That way, the actual winners would be allowed to actually make their speeches.

Today's Oscar ads in Daily Variety: A third of a page for The Kite Runner, with Ebert's 4 star review A sixth of a page for the Brazilian FL film entry A full page listing screenings for the WB films Nothing else, where normally the paper would be crammed with them
