Alright, I know we're technically not supposed to compete in tournaments, but I go to the US Open here in Orlando every year now. I've competed and taken home trophies in the last two years. This year, I placed in the Advanced Self Defense and Advanced Traditional Weapons, and missed my Traditional Forms event. I suppose I do it to prove an example. We don't train in the rigid way, like Karate...

Hm, Its not bad I suppose. But it has nothing to do with what is taught in the Bujinkan. Surely it´s not ninjutsu (by any definition)? What would be the purpose of competing by displaying kata ? Best Regards / Skuggvarg

Many people in the Bujinkan compete. We just don't talk about it and compete under a different guise (I just say i do judo). So if you win you can tell everyone how awesome Bujinkan is and if you lose you just slink away and nobody ever finds out. Ironically most who do compete and win don't boast about it So compete for the right reasons

I think the main reason Bujinkan members are not supposed to compete in most tournaments is because, while live sparring and full contact provide valuable experience, they can also enforce or reinforce very bad habits. Straddling the line between practicing what you train for in an almost full contact situation, and just training to win a competition can be difficult. Elbows to the spine...
