Denise, this is something I've thought of a lot. My mom works and loves to work and does NOT want to go live with any of her kids. If need be, I think she would go with my older sister. Nothing wrong, just that she likes her independence. My FMIL on the other hand, doesn't work and is somewhat used to having everything figured out for her. If FFIL were to pass away she would def. need ...

I don't know, my parents took care of their parents when they were in need (not financially, but physically). I think when the time comes most people would take in their parents instead of making them live in a nursing home. My parents have done so much for me, I would probably build them an adjoining apt with a live in aid if it ever came to that. "There are 3 types of people in this ...

The fact of the matter is FI's mom is going to run out of money. His dad died and left her with a ton of debt no one knew of (not even her). She thought her house was paid off, it's not. She works part time but it doesn't make her enough and she's 68 so finding a good paying job right now is probably slim to none. FI has this brilliant idea of buying out her house (maybe $200K) and then ...

I think the dynamics of having her move into YOUR house and buying out her house and living in it is very different. Although technically its now YOUR house it will always be HER house. When I first moved out my mom gave me that option and I decided not to, 'cause I knew I would be a "guest" in my own house.

1) Have FMIL or Mother live with you if she was in need? I am weird about living with people and having my own space. I know DH would love to sell our house and buy a 2-fam and have his parents live with us. I usually start crying when this comes up. 2) Would you ever buy her house live in it and build a mother daughter for her to live in and in return be a stay at home mom? No, I know this might be horrible to say but I think I would go...

Absolutely not. Not my mom, not his mom, not the neighbor's mom, none of 'em. I do too much divorce work & I've seen too many divorces that occurred because one or both of the spouses' parents were too involved in their relationship. Yes to both- it's something I have thought a lot about. I think that prior generations (and other cultures) did/do a lot better of a job caring for their elders. I've spent some time in Sicily with my family where it is the norm for generations to live together and franky I think everyone benefits, especially your children who get to grow up with their grandparents around. In my case it will likely be my father and my MIL, but I...
