Me and my friend were chattin last night about cinema and the differences between 'arty' films and mainstream movies. is there a rule book one follows to fall under each category, and should all films be considered a piece of art in themselves?

I come from an Art background which has had many more years around than film and it does help when discussions like this come up, people would always say "what is art?" or "That's not Art!" when the point is not to try to distinguish what is art all creation is art if it is intended, the point is to distinguish whether it's good or bad Art. thanks for the answer punch. im wondering though if, aesthetically speaking, a bad film could still be considered an art form. For example, i didnt think much of black hawk down, but there are certain shots i would frame and call art. Wheres the boundry between the two? (in reply to punchdrunk)
