Me and my friend were chattin last night about cinema and the differences between 'arty' films and mainstream movies. is there a rule book one follows to fall under each category, and should all films be considered a piece of art in themselves?

thanks for the answer punch. im wondering though if, aesthetically speaking, a bad film could still be considered an art form. For example, i didnt think much of black hawk down, but there are certain shots i would frame and call art. Wheres the boundry between the two? (in reply to punchdrunk)
