With my son going off to college soon, I'm looking for a way to do iChat video. He has a MacBook with built-in camera and mic, but my Mac Pro doesn't have either. I'm looking for something inexpensive, since I won't be using it all that much. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I'm new at this live video chat stuff. Post Extras:...

before you buy be sure the school allows it... When my son went up to the CIA (Culinary Inst.) in Hyde Park, NY... the school blocked cams... bogged down the system, but that was 5 years ago, so things might be different now. That old dial up connection just couldn't handle it !! David (OFI) Post Extras:

We'll know more soon, after he goes to orientation, which starts tomorrow. The dorms all have Ethernet Internet connections, but not all of them are wireless yet. He's going to miss the wireless thing, for sure... Dial up? Yeah. I don't think you can do video chats on dial up. Where is your son working now? Post Extras:...

Well they did have ethernet/wireless too, but they limited bandwidth. He's at the Crescent Court Hotel in downtown Dallas, TX... not getting rich but he's employed and gaining experience. David (OFI) Post Extras:

Keep your eyes open for an Apple iSight. They're regularly selling up here in Canuckistan for $150 to $175. You cannot get more bang for your buck. - alec - Post Extras:

I don't know if you're willing to go this direction, Donna, but there's software called Maccam that makes a bunch of cheap USB cameras compatible with OS X. The list is here . I've used the software with a Logitech USB camera for a long while, and it works fine, even though it's beta.       Post Extras:...

Thanks to all for the suggestions! I was going to try Maccam on the only digital camera I had in the house with a built-in mic, but the camera wasn't supported. I downloaded Maccam and tried it anyways, just to be sure, but it didn't work. Kept getting the "camera in use by another application" error message. Ended up looking at other options, but came back to the ...

my isight has a bad pixel - whaaaaaaahh. dunno why they had to discontinue that camera so soon. (p.s. drobo all set now with four computers and running through airport extreme, but still no desktop mounting. will phone the drobo help line today and see if they can tell me what's up with that) Post Extras:
