I also posted this on 9-5, but that board moves pretty slow, so I figured I'd post here as well. I currently work from home about 60% of the time, and I would like to make it around 90% of the time, with the exception of our 6-week-long busy season. My boss originally allowed me to work from home part-time after I had a baby, but I have an insane commute and I'm finding that I'm getting burned ...

I should add that there's a bit of a time crunch issue here. Our home is currently on the market, and when we go to buy a new house, I'd like to move to an area that's very far from work -- a much lower COL area. If I can't work from home, then we'll be moving to a town that takes me about 2 hours and 20 minutes each way to commute to work. It currently takes me about two hours each way. ...

I wouldn't give up your benefits as a bargaining chip. I also wouldn't threaten to leave unless you are truly willing to do so. While it is not as ideal as you would like, it may be difficult getting 60% of flexible time to work from home at another company as a new employee. So just because the threat worked for the other employee it may not necesarily work for you. Will you be okay if...

Yes, they do have to do small things like email me questions instead of just asking me, or printing out pages to give to other people. That's about it, though, but, yes, it's something they have to do for me. DH and I are trying to prepare for me not to have a job if they say no, but for many reasons, I would really, really like to make this work with them. DS 8-13-06

I want to add that I also do extra things for them when I'm working for home, such as working extended hours. There have been numerous times that I've handled a problem that occured at 7:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. while the rest of the office was commuting to or from work. DS 8-13-06

I think that is a bonus. I would point that out. Are you willing to continue to be flexible with your hours as a condition of working from home? I don't think printing stuff out is a big thing personally, but it is just a morale issue for the employees still in the office. Especially since they already seem to have some resentment, then I would try to minimize having to rely on them as ...

My husband travels for work and works from home the rest of the time (mostly), so it doesn't really matter that much where he lives. He needs to live within a certain geographical location, but that's about it. I would definitely be willing to work unconventional hours, and thanks so much for pointing that out to me. I'm not sure how much that will matter for them, but it can't hurt, right?...
