In the past, I've had a prejudice against modern Wushu. I used to believe that it was a degeneration and corruption of "traditional" and "genuine" kung fu. But now I am not so sure anymore. I have just read Meir Shahar's new book and it's made me do a lot of re-thinking. Is there REALLY such a big distinction? Or is it just a matter of dates? Both modern wushu and traditional ...

I have been reading plenty of FQ's posts and his stuff has really struck home with me. I tend to think that Wushu is different from TCMA in the same way that Judo is different from JJJ. That being said, if I got back into CMA, I would do Wushu, because most Wushu programs include San Da. The forms in Wushu are just as effective for developing fighting ability as the forms in TCMA: ...

PHP Code: because most Wushu programs include San Da . Certainly not the case in this country, and indeed the inverse is true, most San Da groups are part of TCMA groups. Quote: The methods in Wushu include live training, protective gear, better strength and conditioning tools, etc. Most ...

I would have to say most of the Wushu schools in the US have little to none San Da/San Shou programs. My Kwoon has a small program with about 3 to 6 serious fighters who compete in Muay Thai organized fights as well as other kuoshu based events. I would consider my kwoon a traditional one. My Sifu though has always embraced the full contact fighting aspect since the 60's. When I ...

Sadly, "san da" is now used in many cases simply as a re-naming of "sparring", so TCMA classes that did "sparring" now do "san da". Like alot of things in CMA, there's a lot of lies to untangle to get to the truth. Good level Mainland Chinese san da is a fairly specific skill set, with a characteristic set of movements and techniques. On the other hand, sure, san da could mean simply ...
