Did you pay attention to the movie at all? The whole story line was about how the world didn't appreciate them and thought they were interfering, making things worse for mankind, were freaks. Exactly. The team basically decided that it wasn't worth it trying to protect and fight for humanity when they didn't even appreciate it and just thought they were freaks. I didn't say that it would be the final outcome of the film. After all, the very thing that's keeping Hellboy from fulfilling his destiny and destroying the world is his humanity. But there's been talk about the third film dealing with thier struggle to decide who to align with. The seeds have certainly been planted for something like that. That would make no sense, especially since Liz, Krauss, Hellboy all had humna relatives. What would Krauss, Abe, Hellboy even do if not fight evil? How would they make money? It would be awful if Abe took that job as a host at Red Lobster!

It might not make sense to you, but it's what happened in the original Hellboy comics as well, after Hellboy becomes frustrated with the Bureau's actions one time too many. Admittedly, discovering that they planted a self-destruct deviced on one of his friends is a bit more upsetting than discovering that they planted locator devices on him and his buddies. I bought it that Hellboy, Abe, and Liz quit. Krauss, however, didn't seem like the quiting type. He was all about protocol and line of command and never seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about being a freak. Felt a little abrupt to me.
