One simple point I am trying to make, and I hope the CE companies are listening, is that in the short-term an HD player better be able to do a decent job of playing SD DVDs. Players that cost $1000 or more better be really, really good at playing SD DVDs. Otherwise, people will simply hold-out longer. It was the threads about SD DVD performance that first attracted me to the Toshiba HD-A1. If the...

I think the extra $200 (and that is the exact price difference, using current Amazon prices: $199 vs. $399) for the A1 is worth it: 1...

I pretty much agree with your post.... and it was a long read. I started out as a huge bd fan (because of the storage capacity per layer) but when I started to read more about the formats it became clear hd-dvd did many things much better than bd like making alot of things "mandatory" from day 1 vs everything being an "option" in the bd spec. Stuff like the dual video with iHD, ethernet ports, ...

Good thread with knowledgable discussion- I planned on sitting the "format war" out, but a few things happened. A new 1080p panel and a thirst for HD content. Hell my display/receiver/ speaker set up was way under 10k and at the end of the day I had to have content- I auditioned both formats and HDDVD was the best choice for right now. Really a $400 dollar player, a few purchased titles (or ...

I think that there are several points that get missed by many writers: I think that the argument that since every PS3 console will have the ability to play a BD video, that that equates to those numbers being viable BD customers. I still maintain that the true market analysis is the overlap of PS3 consoles with HD displays. The studio commitment ...
