I have a 7 y/o CLM recently aquired who has just finished his first duck season with me. (Previous owner was a pheasant only hunter) For a dog that hasn't been in the field in 3 years nor ever in a duck blind, he has done well and I plan to train him hard and often to keep the ball rolling for him next fall. His attitude (after refocusing him a bit) in the marsh is good and at home around ...

I don't think you will see a lose in drive at all. I've hunted behind many neurtered male pointers with plenty of drive. Neutered male dogs will have a tendency to put on weight easier but this can be easily controlled with proper exercise and diet. If you are concerned about him getting out with neighborhood dogs coming into heat then neutering is one option. todd

I've owned, hunted and played the games with neutered males. My current dog is neutered. If you saw him work/run you wouldn't worry about loss of drive. I don't think you will regret neutering him at all. Tom

Guess, I'll be first to be odd man out. I don't believe in neutering. Here's an article for additional information. http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html

since the above article is about "early" neutering...."not reccommened prior to 14 months," it is not really that applicable in this case, since the dog is already 7y/o. i had my 3yo done about 6 months ago....definately no drive lost.

I live by "if not broke, don't fix it." I have an unneutered male that's almost 5 years old. He's perfect in the house and around other dogs/cats/people. He has no health problems and he won't ever be bred. I simply haven't had him neutered because there isn't a reason. Why bother? He's not running loose ever so there's no risk of him wandering off to find females in the mood. On the flip ...
