They claimed the JCM2000 was the best amp they've ever built. Whats the best production Marshall in your opinion?

I gotta say, from the ones I've tried I agree with 'em! Admittedly I've only used the 'classic' Marshalls (JCM900, 800) and some newer stuff like the Mode 4 and TSL heads but for me the DSL2000's the absolute best blend of everything Marshall do best without making things too complicated. Actually, if I'm allowed to pick three, can I have a DSL2000 half-stack, a Bluesbreaker 2x12 combo ...

Hmmm. I suspect when they said 'best' they meant that it was the best for them...highest price for the amp that was cheapest to make perhaps. The early Plexi heads are possibly the most sonically sought after. A lot of the classic marshall rock sounds are from amps which have been modded and bear little resemblance to the stock model. eg...the same modded jtm45 id responsible for ...

According to Marshalls, they were so pressured to build the early amps quickly that the components and quality varied. I have an original JTM 45 and so does a friend. They were both made by hand in the same year but using slightly different quality components. As a result, they sound completely different. I love the sound of that amp compared to anything that they have ever made - ...

When you say modded do you mean a change of valves or the actual components? I'd be interested in trying different valves in my TSL122 but I'm not sure it will take anything other than EL34s? Would another companies EL34s change the tone dramatically and can I use other types of valve?

I had a JCM2000, the 40 watt 1x12 version, and it's okay, but hardly the best Marshall ever.

Hmm... For me, DSL50 head is still on the list with a Plexi 50 non master volume. My 9001 pre-amp is a keeper, walks all over the JMP1. And I would love a 20/20 power amp to go with my 9005 power amp. But in my book the SE100 is Marshall's best kept secret. Andy

Hammy has an original Marshall 50w small box plexi from 1968 and a 120w 4 by 12 with celestion greenbacks so i'll admit i am biased lol. Got a nice 1972 Gibson les paul and a jen cry baby, plug it in and hey presto it is the sound of rock from the 60's and 70's. The 18w Marshall's a very nice amp, some of the purple heads are very nice indeed and the silver 25th anniversary pretty good ...

30th Anniversary series 6101 combo. One Fender clean channel. One triple mode channel that mimics all the classic Marshall tones. One high gain Soldano/5150 channel. Midi compatibility. Marshall's answer to the Mesa Boogie MkIV. I had one and loved it. I'll have one again some day. -------------------- Nik Godin, Axon, Tonelab, Electrix Repeater, QY700 & the skin of my teeth!...
