So, I know a lot of safety tips are situational but what's your take on lane positioning? Normally, when cruising down 2+ lane (going in the same direction) roads, I try to stay either in an outer lane and keep a position on the outside edge of the lane, hugging the shoulder. I've tried keeping an inside position (hugging the adjacent lane) but it makes me nervous to think I've got no time...

Take up a dominant position to stop the nice old lady's doing what they want to do, when appropriate. When overtaking dont stay close to the vehicle you are passing. Give yourself room for error. Their error!!! I ride in the UK, totally different for you!!! We have a book called Roadcraft. The Police use it as a manual. It's saved my skin a couple of times.

Simple answer= when cruising, wherever I am most visible; when in town, wherever I can get the heck out of the way. On a two lane with no median I hug the centerline so cars coming the other way can see me, on the highway I tend to travel on the right side of the left lane so people in the middle lane can see me. In bumper to bumper traffic I split. In the city, I take advantage of my ...

I do the same thing you do, I regularly ride a 3 lane road one direction and try to stay in lane 1 position 1 (innermost place to ride) since this is the furthest position from any roads or driveways that come out from the right. There's one place during rush hour where lane 1 gets way backed up (due to a left turning lane), so I move over to lane 3 position 3 in case anyone decides to merge ...

We were taught in MSF to take whatever position that would make you most visible, i.e., sometimes it's center, sometimes it's left, and sometimes right. I think, sitting at a light at an intersection, you would want to be in the left side of the lane, allowing obnoxious cagers to get in the right lane and avoid the above situation (no matter how annoying it is). And, here in VA (as I don't...

So far the worst road paving I've seen is in New Jersey closely followed by New York. The companies that get hired to do the paving do a crappy job so that in 2 years they get hired to do it again. There is not one single well- paved road on Long Island.

If I'm following someone, I'm hugging the center line. Otherwise I'll ride wherever is comfortable. Luckily I don't live in an urban area so we don't have much more than 2 lane high ways which occasionally go to 4 lanes with a center turning lane when going through town. When riding with a friend, whoever is in front is on the left side and the other is on the right side. I haven't ...

I thought you weren't supposed to ride in the center due to slippery oil and other fluids that drip from cars.
