Is inevitable that you will lay your bike down? Just a newbie question. It seems to be a foregone conclusion.

It's not inevitable, just likely. Most of these are at slow speed or when walking the bike around. It sounds kinda silly, but that's when the bike is most unstable, and generally when new riders tend to let their guard down. It helps if you really pay attention to what you are doing before you do it and take your time when moving at slow speed.

This is true for the most part, but I think it's because everyone keeps hearing this and therefore feel the need subconsciously to lay their bike down. If you think, 'people don't lay their bike down', then you wont lay your bike down.

I've been riding street for years and never layed a bike down. But I do get more cautious pushing a bike around as opposed to riding it.

If by "laying it down" you mean lowsiding, then no, not everyone does. If you mean dropping, well I'm not much help for the statistic. I dropped my bike yesterday... It happens and it is not a big deal

Hmmmmm. Most riders drop thier bikes. You stall while turning around in a tight space or maybe get bit during a u-turn...Dropping your bike isn't unusual. "Laying it down" brings to mind that great moment on CHiPs where Ponch sees the gas tanker and it's turning across his path and he 'lays it down' and slide underneath it, thereby saving the bus full of Supermodels (circa 1977) and ...

The statistics show it's a lot more likely for a new rider to be involved in a serious crash as well. New riders that take a MSF course are less likely to be involved in a major accident. The highest rate of serious crashes are in the unlicensed/riding illegally rider category.

The answer is YES. Your question should have been "Whats the best way to pick up your bike if you drop it?". Then you get the tips for picking up your bike when you drop it. I have seen inexperienced riders drop a bike a second time when trying to pick it up (sometimes doing damage to both sides of the bike). "Engine Guards" are a must, and if you are going to go on any ...
