I went to the Fl. Keys today to do some fishing. Basically, I had to average a steady 50 mph most of the way. Coming back, I did not want to put more gas in the car. So I deliberately averaged 55mph all the way back home. A total round trip of 250 miles. I ended up using about 1/2 tank. When I did the calculation, I averaged about 36 mpg. WOW! I am embarassed to say that usually I get ...

What were you looking at as in half of the tank? When you fill up your tank, the half dash mark on the fuel gauge is incorrect. Once you reach the half dash, you've actually used more then half of your tank.

Actually, I calculate the numbers. When I put gas in the car it was deep into the red. (almost about time to get out & push) At that time I put in $27.00 @ $3.07/gal = 8.79 gal. That put the needle 1/2 way bet. 1/2 tank & 3/4. When I got back, I was about 1/8 tank left ( about 1/2 way bet. 1/4 & empty. My total travel distance was 250 miles from the time I drove out of the gas station ...

I can attest that 36MPG+ is quite achievable in 2.3L Aerio, I've been there before. The slower you drive, the more you get. If the you can catch a tail wind, it helps a lot too.

DETENTION FOR USE OF UNACCEPTABLE PRACTICES! Jeesh Peter, your language is a little strong! Furthermore, I have consulted the Aeriostyle.com rules, and no where is there a provision covering acceptable and unacceptable fuel economy computations. If you really want to get accurate MPG numbers, do a injector flow test by pulse in a lab and wire a notebook into the ECU to count ...

I winked you CheneyHEAD, still the gauge bar method is just guesstimating at best. At least the ...

Yeah! It gave me a new respect for the car. A car that can run 15's with some of the high rollers & still give you 37 mpg. What else can you ask for?

i hit 37.5 as my average on a 545 mile trip down to the Outer Banks in my SX4. that was with the windows down most of the time, in FWD, and without the a/c on. i did just about the same on the trip back to PA, but in the rain in maryland, and with the a/c on and windows up.

I had a few I-35 trips between San Antonio and Austin....was able to squeeze over 37 mpg staying 55-60....this is an automatic with no a/c running......My typical commute is a mix of city/highway and I always break 30 mpg if I stay below 2500 rpm or 60-65 mph.
