The first advantage is that it is OpenSource and thus free. This means that you can have OOo installed on as many computers as you want without having a seperate licence for each one. I just want to correct one thing here. There is a difference between "open source" and "public domain". Public domain means that there are no copyright restrictions on it at all, and you can literally do anything you want with it. Open source, on the other hand, usually has a few restrictions. Granted, those restrictions only really come into play if a programmer makes changes...
