Windshield washer fluid...a controlled substance The Escape owner's manual states "Only use a washer fluid that meets Ford specifications" and lists a Ford spec, WSB-M8B16A2, and Ford part number, ZC-32A. Well you just proved what I have known for a long time...California is @$$-backwards. And every thinks that Southerners are @$$-backwards, but Californians take the cake. If you travel to mountainous areas from Southern CA and it starts freezing and you have a full tank of washer fluid, how will you be able to SAFELY see your way to a parts store to buy the correct washer fluid...

Rubbing alcohol works great. Readily available at any drug store and most 99 cent stores too. In the winter I keep a spray bottle full strength for the rare occasion that I have a frosted windshield. Look for the high concentration stuff, like 90%. Even 70% will work though. The 50% stuff isn't as helpful.

I know here in Australia I don't have to worry about winters so cold they freeze my radiator or washer fluids, however I can tell you that plain water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid works a treat.

Methanol is far more corrosive than isoprophyl alcohol. HEET [in the red bottle is pure isoprophyl alcohol], add a bottle to a gallon of water [TWO bottles for temps below 0'degrees F.]

Hmmm, the replies seem more or less along the lines of " name your poison." OK, thanks for the input.

So I must ask: When you come back down from the mountains, do you have to remove the offending washer fluid or risk arrest from the washer fluid nazi's? CA is just plain crazy !

LOL No. Like I already posted, they have road blocks and sniffer dogs. LOL California is not the only state with VOC restrictions that prevent selling proper windshield washer fluid except in the winter. A friend took his California maintained and serviced Chevy Pickup to Utah last year in the middle of winter....

Re: Windshield washer fluid...a controlled substance quote: Originally posted by Esc Well, it turns out that what is sold in most places as ordinary windshield washer fluid is, in California, a controlled substance. Hay man, what are you in for? Possession of 16 oz of windshield washer fluid.
