I have a 95 Mercury Villager that just recently started making a weird noise that is higher pitched and seems like it's coming from the wheel well. It stops making the noise, however, when I break. I would almost describe the noise as sounding like chains jingling, kind of. Sorry, it's the best description I could come up with! Does anybody know what this could be and how serious it is?...

The brake pad is scraping against the rotor slightly and making the noise. When you brake, the pads are pressed hard against the rotor and the noise stops. Find out why the scraping is happening; either the rotor is bent or the caliper is sticking. --scott...

I'm not going to be able to take my car in till next tuesday. Do you think that driving my car during that time will be ok? I mostly just drive back and forth to work, about 2 miles in the city but occasionally go on the highway. Thank you to everyone that has given me some much needed advice!! K

The only thing that's weird is that the noise STOPS when I break. There is no noise involved when I put on the breaks either. It's only when the car is going, I don't even have to be accelerating to hear the noise, just not breaking. I don't think it really sounds like scraping, it's like no noise i've ever heard before on my car as well as anyone elses car. Even my boyfriend is baffled!...

I ended up getting a second opinion from an independent auto shop that was recommended to me by a friend. They said 600.00 tops for all the work stated above. Besides ripping me off, Meineke was trying to charge me to replace parts on my car that I don't even have! And to top this whole experience off, when I picked my car up from Meineke it was dead. DEAD!! The battery had died sitting overnight in their lot. Now, never once since 1995...
