Does anybody here have any experiences of using Kali against other styles of martial arts?

In training, yes; I don't think I've ever been attacked by a martial artist. It is often a bit of a mismatch of interests because FMAers tend to think in terms of having a weapon available, and most TKD players, say, aren't that interested in knife sparring. But I've sparred empty-hand with other martial artists. Sometimes the emphasis on stepping off the line surprises them. Sometimes a limb ...

From a weapons perspective, yes. I have gone against Kendo players. While they had exceptional timing and centerline coverage, I was able to close, tie the weapon and let off some power strikes and thrusts. As far as E-H, it's hard to say that everything I did was FMA cause quite often techniques are similar from discipline to discipline. I spar to be effective in all ranges not to perfect a ...

For me my experience was sparring with my cousin's friends that are training in MMA and also US Marines that I served with and now work with as a civillian. The first group was the MMA and the rules were open hand no fists. Which worked out great for me because as you all know we do heavy handed slaps. the whole thing lasted about 2 minutes with both of us on the mat and me choking him out with ...

I am curious and very interested in hooking up with some of the medeival/rennaisance weaponry practitioners like Amtgard or SCA and see what it's like to spar with them with my FMA single or double stick. I think it would be great. And fun too!

I've had a lot of experience in the SCA. You can get some good hard sparring there, but it's not worth the headache. Or the silly outfits. Or having to act respectful to complete jackasses. Jeff

Never did that with them, did some empty handed sparring with a few. The ones I did that with didn't know how to take a hit without the armor. Jeff

i've only soft sparred kali against other empty hand martial arts/artists. after sparring, plus additional exposure to kali with a trial class with my guro: my brother stopped with wing chun to come train kali with my guro and me. and my best friend is soon stopping with muay thai and mma to do the same. interesting results? but hey, cross training can be a most beneficial thing. i came to ...
