Nice post - I like the tin foil idea...I did my oil change yesterday and used a short funnel under the drain to catch and guide the oil - but the foil would be easier.

I used the SuperTech ST7317 (It's about 1/3rd longer, so it probably has more filter element than stock Yamaha filter - cost $3). I'll switch to Purilator when I go full synthetic / after break-in. I do all my own oil changes, so instead of having a special tool for each filter type, I got one of the tools pictured below (which adjusts to fit most filters). You wrap this around the filter,...

How about filling oil filter partly with oil before the installation? I mean to the level so you don't spill the oil while mounting the filter. It is something like to the half of oil filter, then you quickly mount it without spilling. Some old mechanics told me this is generally good idea, because when you start the engine with brand new oil (old drained before), it starts circulating the ...

I use Baldwin filters, they are probably the best filters on the market. Hard to find, unless you don't mind buying off the net. Baldwin B1402 for the FZ6. Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources

say, i got a question(s)... 1. do you check the oil with the dip stick threaded into the engine? on my old gs500, you were supposed to leave it unthreaded into the engine. 2. do you check the oil on the sidestand, centerstand, or do you lean the bike over so that it sits upright on both wheels?

I changed my oil again this past weekend and switched up to the Yamalube 10W40 which came in the 4 liter jug. Inspired by FZ6inNH's suggestion... Re: How to do an oil change I figured I would know what to do but this thread was a great safety net!!! How much return should I see on an oil change??? Im hoping it wasn't a placebo effect, but the bike is much much smoother, less vibe at higher RPMs, less wining, seems to be less bucking in downshifting feels more like a manual car than a bike... Is this in my head??? The oil was pretty nasty and the filter was beyond needing to be...

GREAT write up. I used it today to do my first oil change on the Fizzer. Well, not it's first oil change... just the first one I've done. The write up makes extremely easy. It's the little things that help. The foil trick was great. I even put some in "front" also to help guide the oil into the drain pan. I like that you metioned the 17mm socket... I didn't have to try the 16 and 18 before getting it...

Nice job on the write-up and pics BD! Awesome! I never thought of the tinfoil trick either but now I know! I have a couple tips myself if you don't mind. Confirm that enough oil has been added by observing the dip stick. Re-install dip stick and oil filler cap. Clean area with brake cleaner to remove any oil residue. Run engine for a few minutes to cycle the new oil. Drain used oil from oil pan into now empty oil jug containers with funnel. Youre done. 30 minutes tops. Edit: I switched to Yamalube 10W40 which only came in a 4 liter jug. To dispense it I bought a $3 2-liter juice container...
