I suppose I have 5 minutes in the week when I have the time to write reviews of a few sentences or so of films I see at the theatre..  So, I am back with a new review format.   The Dark Knight      Heath Ledger is amazing as The Joker, an all-time great villain.  The action is exellent but the story is confusing.  So, this movie gets a grade of B+   Next is Mamma Mia!    ...

Mamma Mia!      I love Meryl Streep.  Abba? Not so much.  This is a joyful telling of a mildly interesting story.  A young woman wants to find out who her biological father is, out of a possible three men.  So, she invites all three to her wedding, unbeknownst to her mother (Streep).  This movie's grade is B- as the songs are mostly average and the acting, not Streep's,  is not so ...

There were two lines at the theater last night. Both really, really long. The Dark Knight and Mama Mia .... One line full of dudes in Batman T-shirts, the other full of sad-looking fellas and their wives/girlfriends and all their friends... Nice Jim. You were in both groups.

LOL -- I wonder what they were sadder about, missing The Dark Knight or having to see Mama Mia ? Now bring me that horizon.

The X-Files:  I Want to Believe      I want to believe too, but I am not sure this is the movie which will make me do so.  Muldur and Scully are separated from the FBI but are called in to help when an agent goes missing and an alleged psychic claims to have visions which will help resolve the case.  This is an average thriller, with some interesting insights, so it gets a grade of B- ...

Step Brothers      In Talladega Nights Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly had a good comedic rapport and they bring their comic touch to this film as well.  Ferrell is Brennan and Reilly is Dale, both are about 40 and still live with their parents.  Each man is incredibly immature and neither has shown any inclination or desire to take adult responsibilities upon themselves.  So, it is funny ...

The Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor      After The Dark Knight   this is the best, most entertaining movie of the summer.  A 1940s Chinese general wants to restore China to its past greatness and he reawakens an ancient Emperor, who has the possiblity of immortality and great power to do so.  This film has car chases, sword fights, hand-to-hand combat and a battle between 2 great ...

Tropic Thunder      This is the best comedy of the summer.  It is about a group of film actors, Tug (Ben Stiller), Kirk (Robert Downey Jr.) and others who are stranded in the jungles of South East Asia thinking they are making a movie but actually caught in the territory of a narcotics gang which wishes to do harm to them.  Eventually they realize they are not making a movie but caught up in...

Milk      This is a much better movie than Brokeback Mountain , the last mainstream gay-themed movie.  It is the story of Harvey Milk (likely Best Actor winner Sean Penn), and the rise of the gay political movement in San Francisco in the early-mid 1970s.  This movie tells of Milk's several runs for public office, which finally culminates in a victory as a City/County Supervisor of San Francisco in 1977.  Milk was the first openly...
