This is so typical of people copying others' misinformation and passing it on to others, etc etc. It's sad but everyone needs to be suspicious of what people tell them and check things out for themselves. This board is actually pretty good for the quashing of anything untrue, but other boards I've seen are truly dreadful!

Do you remember the kid who played Mikey on those Life Cereal commercials? It was the Niacin, one of the active inredients in that fatal mix, that killed him when he mixed soda and Pop Rocks candy. I read this on Wikipedia. Ever since I found out I completely cut out Niacin from my diet. Riboflavin too. No more rose hips, either.

I have taken a B-complex supplement (with niacin) for years. My annual lab results have always came back within normal ranges. Here is a good resource (IMO) for info on vitamins: http://www.acu-cell.com/bx2.html

SIR: I know about the snopes people. I am among the many who believe that they had a hand in the whole thing. It is my understanding, per another article in Wikipedia, that it was Mr. Snopes, Sr. who encouraged the young actor who played Mikey to consume that deadly mix of soda and Pop Rocks. About the snopes web site, I think that a lot of the urban legend debunking that they purport to ...

SIR: Please forgive my split reply, but I just noticed where you mention that Pop Rocks (or Pop Rox) ceased to be produced as of 1983. This is not true. They continue to be made in Switzerland to this day, although access to them and to methaqualone is tightly controlled. It is rumored that some of the more fringe IOPs and illegal email sources offer them. Most often the Pop Rocks they ship (...

Straight niacin is some sick stuff. I was reccomended to take this in my youth to help with acne. Every time I took just one OTC tab I would begin to feel like I was burning up and that my skin was on fire. Don't know if this was an allergic reaction or is much more common

I have never taken Niacin by itself, so have no experienxe to share. I did find an article that is interesting, though. It says that since the FDA considers it a dietary supplement, it is unregulated as in the amounts. The article also said that some are being used to lower cholesterol and some of the supplements found could have high enough levels to be toxic to the liver. Excerpt: Many people take over-the-counter niacin as a replacement...

Mikey did NOT die from eating pop rocks, the actors name is John Gilchrist and he is very much alive. I take 3000mg of niacin every day because I have high triglycerides and it is used for part of my treatment. I had to start on lower does and work my way up, and after awhile you get used to it (atleast I did) I don't even have flushing anymore. It also helps lower LDL for me anyway.

The 5 hour energy drink that is sold in most drugstores now contains a large amount of Niacin I believe. They warn on the side of the bottle about a reddening of the skin with a flush feeing in your face. I believe they say it would last about 15 minutes to a half an hour.

My husband takes that nasty Niaspan to lower his chol. Its dr scripted. He burns like fire for 30 minutes each night after taking his 2 pills. He has been on it for a few years and the burning has never NOT happened after taking the pills. He was told it would stop after about a month but it hasn't. The sheets on his side get wet from his sweating. Its nasty!
