I've always been a firm believer in spaying and neutering, but I read some articles that concern me. Mind you, I've never had a male dog before. I was reading that vets really only discuss the benefits and ignore a lot of the risks in regard to this. (I am not trying to offend anyone on here). There was mention that certain cancers and cognative problems are actually higher in neutered ...

The only negatives I know of are: There is a risk with any animal going "under" that they might not come back They have a slower metabolism, and are therefore more likely to get phat The site of the incision can get infected and cause major pain I personally have 7 intact males, and 4 neutered males, and the intact seem to be more hyper, and jump more. But the neutered are more likely...

Don't know if one of the articles you read was this - http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHealthEffec tsOfSpayNeuter InDogs.pdf If not, you may find it interesting. It is a survey of the scientific evidence and paints a rather different picture from the mainstream opinion that neutering male dogs is the way to go. I think articles like this are immensely more useful in informing one's ...

Yes, I did read that article. That was one of the main ones that made me curious. I think I will take the article to my vet and discuss it. I want to make the best decision for my little guy.

With the larger breeds, if neutered before maturity, they may have growth problems.

Not an expert, but I just had Siri neutered at two years, and he's doing fine, and seems to have calmed down a bit. Of course, that could be just because he's two years old now.

There definitely are two sides to the coin. I struggled over the health benefits/risks associated with the age at which it's done. A deciding factor for me was that the "day camp" Henry goes to requires all participants to be fixed. He has a ball at day camp, and it is a great alternative to leaving him home alone for extended periods. It's a great social experience and tires him out for days...

I read all of the articles re: negatives of neutering, and decided to keep Baloo intact indefinitely. However, he hit 15 months of age and literally became a different dog. He had been so fantastic with other dogs, had never met one he didn't get along with. He became a mad humpaholic, not interested in playing at all anymore. He started humping dogs he's known his entire life and had ...

There is an option to surgical neutering. It's called neutrosol. Not all (or probably many) vets in the US use it, but our GSD was neutered with this. It's a solution that is injected in the testes that renders them 'neutered'. There is no surgery. There is still a very small amount of testosterone made by the dog, but the dog is sterile. There are pros and cons that I have observed, and ...

Neutersol cuts the hormones in almost half, so some of the risks associated with removing the hormones from the body are probably still present at a lower level. There's also canine vasectomies, but they also are not avaialable in all vet clinics, and require a short surgery (to cut or tie the vas deferens). Personally, when it comes to altering dogs I believe EVERY dog should be treated as ...
