Hi All It's my third date with a girl I'm really quite keen on - and this time it's for dinner. It's very early stages and so far we've only got as far as kissing on the cheek when saying goodbye. It was my suggestion to go for dinner, and I'm wondering what to do if she offers to pay half the bill. Should I accept? I have to admit I would prefer to split the cost, since the restaurant is ...

The one doing the inviting picks up the tab UNLESS other arrangements are discussed and agreed upon in advance. May I ask who suggested the "fairly expensive" restaurant? If it was her suggestion, you might be able to approach the subject of going dutch by stating it is a little rich for your blood. If it was your suggestion, you might be honest about the cost and say you spoke before you ...

Here where I live it would have nothing to do with romance.....not in my age group anyway. The person who asks the other one out does the paying. Simple as that. If you asked her to dinner she should not pay any part of the bill . That is your responsibility. If you can't afford the expense then find a cheaper restaurant.

Your invitation, you picked the restaurant, you pick up the tab. Simple. If you're concerned about the tab, maybe skip appetizers, go for the inexpensive main course and just a 1/2 litre of house wine and tell the waiter on the sly to keep the water glasses filled. Say, you hope she doesn't mind but you thought going somewhere different for desert and coffee might make the evening a little...

If you invite her you should pay. If she insists more than once, "let" her pay the tip.

It was me who suggested the restaurant - however I should clarify that it's not an especially expensive restaurant - just that all restaurants (apart from really grotty ones and MacDonalds) are expensive here in Central London :)

It sounds like you're stuck with picking up the tab. Some options would be to pick a different and less expensive restaurant or you could get creative (like a picnic but this really isn't the best time of year for that and finding an indoor venue might be difficult). Personally, if she insists on paying for half I see nothing wrong with allowing her to do so. Also, you might discuss with her...

Then whats the problem? Dating costs money, it always has and always will. Is she worth an entree to you? Sheesh, I hope none of my dates have ever been on a site asking for opinions on who picks up the tab on something they invited me to? I didn't realize men had such a hard time with this part of the equation. All the best to both of you.

Now, that's coming from a 'woman' who wrote a 250 page book on the subject. Mind you, I had to do a lot of surveys, questionaires, and communications with a tremendous amount of both women and men (approximately 1000 of both sexes). So, take it whatever way you will, but it looks like the women have spoken! ;) I've been on these forums a very long time & I find that every time a "Who pays" topic comes out at...

Once again, thank you from coming down from your mountain to set all of us straight! Your ability to insult others is remarkable! Money well spent! Tax dollars well spent! Seems like tit for tat to me. I didn't hear a whole lot of desire to understand or support me in making my case from either of you guys. Live by ridicule, die by ridicule? It is _so_ easy to play hero when one knows that doing so will surely please the ladies. And that...

Actually a "militant feminist" would be the one most apt to insist on separate checks. I usually get separate cheques, but if the man wants to pay and I want him to I easily concede lol. So.....if I often ask for separate cheques, what does that make me if I'm not a feminist? I think it might have to do with the way I was brought up and the way I have had to fend for myself for many years? That still doesn't change the...

BYYY This last post of yours is so spot on! The only thing I'd change in your scenario is that as a woman, I'd be the one packing the special picnic lunch. You can bring the wine, though. Red please.

So, guys, expect to pay for those first few dates. Fine if a woman doesnt mind coffeee on all three. IF there's no contribution by the second date I'm out. You can figure out how giving a person is in this little time. You should have seen the waiter's face when I ask for separate bills! Waiters like this don't get tips.

I am glad it worked out for you! I still think you should have taken the check and insisted you pay, but it worked out for you and that is all that matters. Just a side note: When I have offered to pay my half, the men do not pause and make an "errrrr' noise. They immediately insist and say no, you are not paying for dinner. So, if a man paused and did not give me a quick insistance he pay....I'd most definitely pay. The...

veryreal1, Thanks for all your wisdom. What would we all do without your college educated highness? It was a text book example of insulting everybody who doesn't share your point of view. Did they teach you this in college? Or is it a natural skill? I am really impressed, one way or another.

Look, fellas...it's really easy to understand and I'll say it simply so that you can. If you don't want to pay for meals, be chivalrous, etc., just anticipate that MOST women will NOT date you again! The ones who do date you, usually won't do it for too long, or...you will remain within the 'friend status' position! Now, that's coming from a 'woman' who wrote a 250 page book on the subject. Mind...
