I have three motors to choose from. 1. MEGA 16/15/2 2. MEGA 16/7/7 and 3. VM 2020/20 I also have a Hangar 9 Aspire powered 2M glider. I really don't want to use the stock Aspire motor and happen to have the three motors above available. Can I use one or all of these? What prop? Geared? Battery ? ESC ? Any help appreciated.

Relying purely on Motocalc: I imagine the 16/15/2 (rated at 38A max) geared about 6:1 might be suitable for driving a 12x8 folder. Motor: Mega ACn 16-15-2; 4600rpm/V; 2.97A no-load; 0.012 Ohms. Battery: Thunder Power TP4000 (ProLite) (10C); 3 cells; 4000mAh @ 3.7V; 0.018 Ohms/cell. Speed Control: Castle Creations Phoenix 25; 0.0065 Ohms; High rate. Drive System: 12x8 (Pconst=1.06; ...

Thanks Kiwi I'm thinking these motors are a bit much for my project. I want to keep it cheap and simple. I have the three motors I mentioned and would like to use one of these direct drive without gearing. Is that possible in a slow flying 2M powered glider? Would one of these work? Folding prop not necessary. (in reply to Dr Kiwi )

ALL those motors have Kv which is far too high for direct drive with other than tiny props or EDF fans. 16/15/2 (4600Kv) 16/7/7 (2450Kv) Velkom (3415Kv) You need a big slow revving prop for a sailplane - a 4-5" prop (which is as big as you could use, even on the lowest Kv 16/7/7) screaming at 20,000rpm+ is not going to do it. You HAVE to go geared if you want to use ANY of these....

I am glad you answered my post. I did not have any idea about the numbers on these motors. I have a lot to learn about E-power. I think I will sell this stuff and get something else. What setup would you suggest in a brushless direct drive? (in reply to Dr Kiwi )

It seems that from the recommendation of an E-flite 480, a 10-12" prop and perhaps 200W-250W would suit it. A cheaper solution might be a Dynam (or KD) A22-20L... that's an inexpensive but solid motor which spins an 11x5.5 on about 23A. http://www.****/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?id Product=2106&Product_Name=KD_A22-20L_Brushless_Out runner_Motor...

Thanks so much for your help. I fell in love with Hobby City. I can't believe the low Lipo prices. I just ordered the motor, some props and a shiny new lipo to go with it. This plane ought to perform well. Any idea where to get a decent folding prop? I was not too impressed with Hobby City's selection and don't know where else to shop for one....

quote: ORIGINAL: Cashpoboy Any idea on shipping times for Hobby City? I think it is a crap shoot! My only order from them took 2 weeks, but I've heard 6 days.... to 2 months. I buy quite often from aircraft-world in Japan... usually less than a week for $2.50! < Message edited by Dr Kiwi -- 8/23/2008 11:26:58 PM >

I got the KD A22-20L. That motor is so cheap I couldn't believe it. It has a ton of power. I will be getting more of these. I'm swinging the Hobbycity APC copy E/12-5. I was going to try a smaller dia prop but it seemed to swing the 12" with a lot of gusto and worked great. Did have some vibration problems. I am lazy and don't balance my props anymore but I think it would help in this case. (in reply to Dr Kiwi )
