Despite the insistence of the groupuscules that the EU is responsible for the post office closures, which is currently the subject of controversy, we have robustly maintained that this is a home-grown affair, brought upon us by our own government, without the intervention of the EU. However, a piece in yesterday’s Daily Telegraph (business section, of course) puts something of ...

"So, we get there eventually – you can now blame the EU for post office closures, in part at any rate". On behalf of all us 'groupuscles' (whatever that means), thanks for that, Richard. As I said to you 'the EU is written all over the destruction of our postal service' - why else would a British Government, even one as bad as this, deliberately destroy it purely on its own account - mad. I ...

RAENORTH wrote: The TV license contract is especially interesting as this was worth £100 million to the post office in the financial year 2000-2001 and would undoubtedly be worth more now. A side issue, but the costs involved in administering the ever increasing number of niggling salami taxes are pure waste. While not watching TV myself, it is sufficiently ...

I was told by a local postmaster, waiting for the axe to fall, the following:- Quote: Post Offices which are invited to remain open have to (a) agree to provide a service in the area to Villages which are losing theirs. This can be done by van (provided by Post Office personnel at their own expense), or using an existing pub/shop etc. (b) Insurance ...

Hmm, I smell a market for mobile Post Offices along the lines of mobile libraries. Security is the truck itself and whoever unlocks it is responsible. A bit of clever IT should enable the truck to be online so accounts can be logged real-time. One truck should be able to do an hour at 5 or 6 villages per day, or days per week by arrangement between the villages serviced. I'd recommend collective...

I've been somewhat bemused at the stance taken by some that the Post Offices situation (and indeed the Royal Mail) is not a result of EU direction.Surely the only reason for the Post Offices suddenly becoming a loss situation is because of all the facilities being taken away from them. Similarly, the Royal Mail has been seriously affected by the introduction of "private" competition. All of ...

I still have my pension paid into the village PO. It is very handy to be able to toddle down and get some cash whenever I need it, instead of having to drive 8 miles to the nearest town. If our village PO is closed, the shop will shut too. That will be great for all those who don't drive. I understand Gordon Brown doesn't drive, I wonder how he would get on without his ...

The picture I put up is from a tiny village in North Yorkshire, but there are pensioners in the ...
