I have had my system for a few months now but only recently I connected my home studio to the line in to copy over some music. I found that I could not hear what was playing through the computer on the connected speakers or on headphones. The sound is recording onto the computer okay. This is an on-going problem with the Dell integrated audio (on all new models) and Vista.  Dell is aware of the problem but there is no ETA on a fix (if they ever fix it).    If you would have done a search, in this section, before posting you would have found the answer to your question.
