Nice review, though I don't really see the huge gains over DVD Studio Pro -- many features seem to match one another. Love the Flash output option but 640x480 is, as mentioned, useless, not even widescreen. One thing I don't think the review addressed: does HDV (or AVCHD) footage need to be recompressed to go onto a Blu-Ray disc? DVD SP doesn't recompress HDV, which is a big time saver for ...

Great Review I have been meaning to get back into Encore, iDVD just doesn't cut it anymore. I used Encore 1 for my first DVD project. Then I bought a mac... Question: How many layers is blu-ray atm, and do you think encore will ever allow manual control of the switch? Most movies switch at a moment with no action, so its nice to see that it has manual control for DVDs. Its sad to see that ...

But the people who are buying the products, and thus setting the stage for the winner, aren't non-technical ...

Good review thanks, agree with most of it. For the benefit of us international folk though I would have liked to see more mention of PAL formats - I assume the US version doesn't only support NTSC?

What is with the screenshots being JPEGs and badly scaled? Everyone and their uncle knows PNG or GIF files are better for screenshots than JPEG files. They also know that almost all browsers do a terrible job of scaling images. Yet recently most Ars reviews have used JPEGs for screenshots or even graphs, which have led to nasty looking artefacts. I know this is beside the point, but it's web-...

Re: screenshots, why are they all a sea of grey? Is that Adobe style or mac style? Just looking at all this grey makes me feel depressed.... what if I wanted to produce a jolly comedy with this software? ;P

Bitrate: Dunno why, but every bitrate I have ever seen is a BITrate as in bits per second, not bytes. Video bitrates, audio bitrates, even internet connection speeds. I was told this is (well, the network rates anyway) because some transmissions use 7 or less bits per character so the bytes per second wouldn't equal the baud... or something. Gray: it's neutral so the color of the interface doesn...

Good review, but I have a few questions: 1) Does it support authoring Blu-ray structure on DVD? Or AVCHD compliant discs? 2) Is its overhead predictable/computable? As in, if I have a different app for encoding h264 stream (and I have zero intention of switching and it has about zero chance of plugging into Encore), can I predict how much space the rest of Blu-ray structure will take? You know ...

I've read the spec before I was nearly positive that an SD downgrade would happen if, and only, the optional ICT was utilized by...

This is a wonderful review. I have questions about the minimum requirements to successfully run the program...Intel E6550 brawny enough to do Blu Ray or is a Quad required?

As mentioned, you can certainly create new menus in Encore from scratch. Why you would want to, except for the quickest thrown-together projects is another question, given how easy it is to do everything in PS, but you can do it. The bug about AE compositions is certainly annoying, but it is also a known issue mentioned in the read me files, so they will probably fix it. Another bug which you may encounter even when working with DVD projects...
