I had Dagan to the vet today and was talking about making his neutering appointment and this particular vet (I've seen 3 different ones at this office so far) mentioned that they're suggesting waiting until 13 months of age to neuter. They still suggest the 6-8 months as well but are giving clients to information and letting them choose. The reason for the 13 months is because of bone and ...

You can totally tell a male cat who was neutered early on, his bones are not nearly as thick. So ya, I'd agree that their bones will be better formed if you wait longer. Is Dagan an indoor cat only? Obviously if there is any chance of him getting out then you'd want to neuter him sooner. My other concern would be waiting would increase his chance of developing spraying behavior. I guess ...

Dagan (and his brother Bresner) are Husky/Malamute Cross. Bresner may already have some hip problems, not entirely sure yet. I'll be sure to look up some studies and see what's being said.

Just had our new pup in to the vet for her first check up and the vet told us the same thing. 12-14 months and wait till Sadie has had her 1st heat then get her fixed. She mentioned that in bigger breeds a early "fix" can cause bone problems and result in the dogs legs growing straighter than they are supposed to.

I don't think there is enough evidence to support or deny the belief that sterilizing too early will cause damage to their bones. IMO the pros to neuter ASAP far outway the cons but then again I'm involved in rescue and we see all too often the results of oop litters.

I've never had a female dog, so I can't say either way there, but all 3 breeders that I've gotten my dogs from over the years recommended not getting my male pups neutered until they were at least 1 year old. All had said that to ensure proper skelatel (sp) development and to ensure that they developed all the male traits of the breed, coat, body height and length. Waiting until they were at ...
