I'm a huge Replacements fan, but I've yet to really check out any of Westerberg's solo stuff (or Grandpaboy). Which albums of his are a solid, safe bet? I've heard some lukewarm reviews, and others that straight-up bash most of his solo material, so I don't really know where to start. Help a whiteboy out?

14 Songs for sure.

most Replacements songs are essentially Westerberg solo compositions, with the only real difference being the other musicians he surrounds himself with at the time. but the best part of those songs is usually the lyrics, so i am interested as well. what do the solo albums sound like, compared to the Mats?

Westerberg's solo albums always get terrible reviews because they're not Replacements albums. It's like a reverse Bob Dylan effect, where he gets great reviews simply for making an effort. 14 Songs is a decent album, but Suicaine Gratification is the best album he ever made, Replacements included. Eventually is less rocky than 14 Songs and not as good, and Folker is like Suicaine ...
