If there is any advantage, it's from the analog that is still in operation and compatible with CDMA. Once that goes dark, it'll be interesting to see how GSM vs CDMA carriers fair in those areas where analog was an advantage.

Here in California, Verizon's AMPS is dead and gone, as far as I know anyway, but US Cellular, Alltel and Golden State Cellular are still running it, and only Alltel has announced any plans to shut it off in the near future. In addition, US Cellular is also still running a TDMA network, up here they have CDMA, TDMA and AMPS going. Edit-Edge started out TDMA, but started ...

A lot of loggers, vineyard owners, CDF, foresty workers, etc. still use 3-watt installed and bag AMPS phones in this part of CA. Also, the Highway Call boxes have traditionally been powered by AMPS, but they have been converting them over to digital. To be fair, railroads, trucking, loggers, etc. have their own radio networks set up

To correct some of the earlier posts, I recall that Alltel did bid on a few licenses, but not very hard. They won none, but they did contest a few, early on.
